Obviously, staff here at the Agency have been much focused on the E.coli outbreak in Germany over the past fortnight. But it serves to remind us yet again of the importance of good food hygiene measures all along the food chain, in an all too tragic a way.

Fortunately, food hygiene is very much at the forefront of many people’s minds at the moment – judging by the exchange of information about Food Safety Week in the social media world.

The local community has been a big part of sharing information about this year’s Food Safety Week, both in real communities and in cyber communities. Schools, community groups and local councils, are running range of events across the UK, to highlight the importance of food safety and hygiene in the home and they’ve been sharing and promoting these activities both on our facebook page and on Twitter. There have been hundreds of tweets about Food Safety Week in the past few days – some serious, some more flippant, but both raising awareness of food safety.

For this year’s Food Safety Week, we’ve been busting food myths to get people thinking about how good their hygiene is in the kitchen and what they could do better. We’ve already had an admission from Ann Milton, the Minister for Public Health, that she has fallen for one of these myths. So why don’t you check out our quiz and test your food hygiene knowledge – then share your experiences, either here or via other social networks?
