An article on the front page of the Metro this morning called for restrictions to be lifted on the few farms still affected by the nuclear accident at the Chernobyl power plant. This issue has generated enquiries from a range of papers and radio stations.
The accident resulted in some radioactivity being deposited on upland areas of the UK, which raised concerns about the safety of meat from these affected areas.
But what the Metro journalist failed to mention was that we are already carrying out a review to assess whether these measures are still needed to maintain food safety.
It’s a quarter of a century since the disaster, so we feel it’s an appropriate time to review the situation. But as always, the Agency's primary concern is food safety and so no changes will be made to the current controls without the appropriate evidence to support that decision.
